Always modify your driving by slowing down and reduce any acceleration and brake early etc. Rain is bad enough on its own but sitting on top of fuel spills, dirt etc it can become as slippery as ice. • Slow down! Stopping distances in the wet are double that of the dry. Your tyres will grip the road much less and make cornering more hazardous. • Avoid aquaplaning. This happens when your vehicle is travelling too fast. The tyre is designed to remove the water from the road underneath it allowing contact between the tyre and the road surafce. If a safe speed is exceeded then the tyre cannot remove the water fast enogh and the tyre rises up onto the surface of the water where there is no grip. Once a tyre looses contact with the road you loose any steering or braking ability. • Keep your distance from other road uses. Vehicles can throw up a lot of water spray which can obscure your vision when travelling too close behind. • Turn on your headlights. Visiblity is reduced so Be Safe - Be Seen • Use windscreen wipers and demisters.
