POLICE FORCE AREAS
Police force areas varied widely in the number of drink driving tests carried
out in 2006 per 100,000 population,from 240 in West Midlands to 3,600 in Cheshire.
Map1 illustrates the distribution across England and Wales. Forces with the highest
number of tests per 100,000 population were Cheshire, North Wales, Cumbria and
Cleveland. The proportion of tests, which are positive or refused, also varied
by force, from six per cent in Cheshire, Cumbria and North Wales to 75 per cent
in Gwent (see Note 16).
Map2 shows police force areas by the number of positive or refused tests per 100,000
population in 2006. Forces with the highest rates of positive tests per 100,000
population were West Yorkshire, Thames Valley, Dorset, Gloucestershire and Metropolitan
(including City of London).
• 601,600 screening breath tests were carried out during 2006, one per cent less
than in 2005
• The number of positive or refused tests in 2006 rose by one per cent from 104,300
in 2005 to 105,700 in 2006
• The proportion of tests positive or refused in 2006 was 18 per cent, one percentage
point higher then in 2005
