Replacing a lost or stolen registration document or certificate

If your registration document or certificate has been lost, stolen or destroyed, you will need to get a replacement from the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA). You can make an application by post or you may be able to get a replacement over the telephone.

Applying by post

You can get a replacement registration certificate (V5C) by completing a vehicle registration certificate application form V62 which you can get by download from the link below or at any licence issuing Post Office® branch or DVLA local office. Return the form and the fee of £19.00 to DVLA, Swansea SA99 1DD.

If your personal details have changed, you can notify them on the V62 application form.

DVLA will aim to deliver a new registration certificate to you within four weeks of receiving your application. However, please allow six weeks before contacting DVLA.

Applying by telephone

If you have previously had a registration document or certificate for your vehicle in your name, and there is no change in vehicle or personal details, you may apply for a duplicate registration certificate over the telephone. You should contact DVLA customer enquiries (vehicles) on 0870 240 0010. A fee of £19 is payable. You will need a debit or credit card for the payment. You will receive the registration certificate within 10 working days.

Exemptions to the fee

The £19 fee is not payable if:

  • you are using the existing registration document or certificate to notify changes
  • you are the new keeper of the vehicle and the previous keeper has failed to notify DVLA of the change. You must be in possession of the new keepers supplement (V5/2 or V5C/2) of the registration document or certificate and send this to DVLA with the V62 application form. You will receive the registration certificate within four weeks. However, please allow six weeks before making enquiries
  • the vehicle has been categorised as C salvage by the insurance industry and they have destroyed the registration document or certificate (Categories A, B or D are not exempt from the fee. A = scrap only; B = break for spare parts only; C = repairable but repair costs exceeded vehicle value; D = repairable). DVLA will carry out checks to ensure that the vehicle criteria are met. Further information about the categorisation of vehicles is available from the insurance company. DVLA is unable to divulge this information
