Renewing
your driving licence entitlement for larger
vehicles, minibuses or buses at 45 or 65
Large
goods vehicle (LGV) or passenger carrying
vehicle (PCV) driving licence entitlements
are valid until your 45th birthday. After
that, you will need to renew your entitlement
every five years until you are 65. After
the age of 65 you have to renew your licence
every year.
How
to renew your driving licence entitlement
If
you are a paper driving licence holder
you will be automatically sent a D47
and D750 reminder application forms.
You will also receive a D4 medical report
form that must be completed by a doctor,
ensuring that all the relevant questions
are completed. These will be sent 90
days before the expiry of your driving
entitlement from the Driver and Vehicle
Licensing Agency (DVLA). You must complete
these application forms ensuring that
all the relevant questions are answered.
You will need to enclose original documentation
confirming your identity and a passport
style colour photograph.
If
you are a photocard driving licence
holder you will only be sent a D47 reminder
application form and the D4 medical
report form. You must make sure the
forms are complete but there will be
no need to enclose any identification
or photograph.
If,
however, your name has changed since
your last licence was issued you must
also complete the D2 application form
(available from most Post OfficeŽ branches),
along with the D47. You must also enclose
original documentation confirming your
change of name. There is no need to
supply a new photograph. There is also
no fee required for these applications.
What
to do if you do not receive the forms
If,
for any reason, you do not receive the
reminder application forms to apply
for your driving licence, you can use
the D2 application form with a D4 medical
report form, which is available from
DVLA form ordering service.

Where
to send your completed application forms
Send
your completed application with your paper driving licence
or photocard driving licence with the D740 paper counterpart
to DVLA, Swansea SA99 1BR or you may be able to use the
Post OfficeŽ checking service.
DVLA
aim to deliver your driving licence to you within three
weeks of receiving your application. It might take longer
if we have to check on your health, personal details or
driving conduct. Please allow at least three weeks for
your licence to arrive before contacting DVLA.
Can
I drive before my licence is returned?
Once
the DVLA has received your valid application, the law
allows you to drive before the licence arrives as long
as:
- you
have held a GB or Northern Ireland licence issued
since 1 January 1976 or another exchangeable licence
- you
are not disqualified from driving (there are different
rules for medium or large vehicles, minibus or bus
drivers - the traffic commissioner for your area
will decide whether to grant your entitlement to
drive these vehicles)
- you
have not been, and would not be, refused a licence
for medical reasons
- you
keep to any special conditions which apply to the
licence
Further
Information
You
must tell the DVLA if you have ever had, or currently
suffer from a medical condition that may affect your driving.
You
must tell the DVLA if you have convictions for breaking
rules about your driving conduct and any other convictions
not relating to driving.
