How to obtain your free disabled tax disc

If successful in claiming your exemption, you will be issued with a certificate of entitlement that you can use to obtain your free tax disc. How to obtain your tax disc will depend on whether you are the registered keeper of the vehicle or have recently obtained it.

I am the registered keeper of the vehicle

If you are in possession of the vehicle registration document or certificate (V5/V5C) you will be able to obtain your first free tax disc at a licence issuing Post Office®. If you do not have the V5/V5C, your first application will need to be made at a DVLA local office.

You will need to take or send the following documents, photocopies are not acceptable:

  • exemption certificate - DLA404 or WPA442. This is not required to license invalid carriages
  • vehicle licence application form V10, available for download on the vehicle forms link below or from any Post Office® branch or DVLA local office
  • a valid MOT test certificate - if applicable
  • a valid certificate of insurance or cover note
  • vehicle registration document or certificate (V5 or V5C) - the vehicle must be registered in the name of the disabled person or the nominee named on the exemption certificate. If this is not the case, you should complete the keeper changes section on the registration document or certificate before you produce it with your application

If you do not have a V5 or V5C (eg original lost or stolen) you can either:

  • use form V62 (application for a vehicle registration certificate) and apply to tax at your nearest DVLA local office
  • or apply for a replacement over the telephone. When you receive your registration certificate (within 10 working days), you can apply to tax at the Post Office®

A £19 fee is required on both cases

I am not the registered keeper

If you have recently obtained the vehicle:

  • vehicle registration document or certificate (V5 or V5C)
  • new keepers supplement (V5/2 or V5C/2) and complete form V62. The V5/2 and V5C/2 can only be used for up to two months after you acquire the vehicle
  • if neither the V5, V5C, V5/2 or V5C/2 is available, you will not be able to tax the vehicle without first obtaining a V5C. To obtain a V5C you must complete a V62 and send it to DVLA Swansea SA99 1DD. A £19 fee is payable to DVLA Swansea.

Buying a brand new vehicle

If you are buying a new vehicle and it is being registered for the first time by a dealer you will need to let him have your exemption certificate. He will make the application on your behalf. You should ensure that the exemption certificate is not retained by the dealer once the vehicle is taxed.

How to claim a refund on your current tax disc

As soon as you have your free disabled tax disc you may apply for a refund on complete months remaining on your current tax disc.

How to renew your free disabled tax disc

You will be able renew your free disabled tax disc at the Post Office ® using the tax renewal reminder form sent to you by the DVLA or vehicle registration document or certificate along with your certificate of entitlement. Information on renewing your tax disc can be found on the link below.
